BB26 Extension – Reuse in action – A responsible approach

Key points
Following a constructive discussion with an organisation committed to promoting the reuse of materials in Switzerland, we have, in collaboration with the main contractor (ADV SA), incorporated these principles at the heart of the BB26 extension project.

Assessing existing resources, identifying reusable elements, adapting the design and making targeted use of second-hand materials: a practical approach that turns the constraints of the existing structure into opportunities.

Objectives
To reduce the project’s environmental impact, minimise waste and the use of new materials, whilst demonstrating the technical and economic feasibility of reuse. This approach also aims to accelerate the adoption of circular practices in construction, raise awareness among project stakeholders and optimise costs.

Roof insulation, waterproofing elements, guardrails and smoke extraction domes
Reuse of the following elements, retaining their original function:
– Facade sandwich panel
– Roof insulation materials
– Roofing accessories, balustrades and dormers
– Cable trays and lighting rails
– Solar panels
– Ventilation units, heat pumps and associated equipment
– Heavy protective elements and signage

Recycling of the existing steel structure:
– It was sent to a foundry, where it will be melted down and recycled into new steel sections, thereby contributing to a closed-loop material cycle.
